Dear colleague,

According to the ICRP statement, the threshold in the absorbed dose for the lens of the eye is now considered to be 0.5 Gy and for planned occupational exposure the Commission has recommended an equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye of 20 mSv in a year, averaged over defined periods of 5 years, with no single year exceeding 50 mSv. The previous limit was 150 mSv/y.

In this framework, the members of Eurados Working Group 12 prepared a questionnaire on eye lens dosimetry issues addressed to medical physicists and radiation protection officers in European hospitals. The questionnaire aimed to gather some general information and some specific data for the eye lens monitoring practices (such as type of dosemeter, protection measures, training etc) as well as the respective eye lens doses in different hospitals.

Answers were gathered from November 2013 to March 2014. In total we got 200 answers, 195 from Europe. The results of the questionnaire are now being analyzed and they will help to formulate some basic guidelines on eye lens monitoring. The main results will be published in a scientific journal and will be sent back to the participants in a short report, which will be uploaded in Eurados web site.

Should you have any question please send a message to calibracion.laboratorio@upc.edu
