Aims of the programme
  • To study the physical, chemical and meteorological processes that are responsible for spatial and temporal variations of radionuclide concentrations in the environment
  • To develop measurement methods for environmental surveillance of natural and artificial radionuclides

Current Research Projects
  • MATER - Development and validation of advanced atmospheric dispersion models for their application in radiological emergency systems.
    MICINN ref. CGL 2008-00473/CLI (2009-2011)
    Arturo Vargas Drechsler
Radon concentration measurements at hourly intervals at heights of 10m and 100m, together with sampling of various meteorological parameters and data of the radon soil flux provides a set of data which enables validation of atmospheric dispersion models in coastal regions. Specifically, the mesoscalar model MM5-FLEXPART6.2 will be validated and compared with RODOS. In this project, the University of Huelva(UHU), the National Instute of Aerospace Technology (INTA) and CIEMAT participate in different research sections.
  • Analysis of the representativeness of PTS ATM backtracking results at the IMS stations.
    CTBTO ref 2009-1550 (2010)

    Arturo Vargas Drechsler
In this project the influence of the resolution of the input meteorological fields and the radiological IMS station location of the CTBTO, especially at those stations located in topographically structured terrain, on the calculated source-receptor sensitivity will be analysed.
  • Analysis of spectrometric environmental dose rate monitor based on LaBr3 scintillator. (2010)
    Arturo Vargas Drechsler
The main objective of the project consists on setting up and characterizes a new dose rate monitor based on LaBr3 scintillator material. Characterization of the monitor will be carried out in the Calibration Laboratory of the INTE accredited by ISO 17025 and using the PENELOPE Monte Carlo code. In the project, the INTE collaborate with the research group of Dr. Ulrich Stölker from the German Federal Office for radiation Protection (BfS).
  • SOSTAQUA - Environmental radiological impact of subproducts related to water treatment. Risk evaluation due to radioactive components
Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial ref. CENIT 2007-1039 (2007-2010)

    Isabel Vallés
The main activities of the SOSTAQUA project are related to the study of the distribution of radioactive isotopes in the different processes of water treatment (sea, river or aquifers), both in drinking water treatment plants or in waste water treatment.
  • Study of the problems in determining the total alpha activity index in drinking water: Procedures proposal
    CSN (2010-2011)

    Isabel Vallés
Spain's Royal Decree No. 140/2003 sets out the health criteria for the quality of water used for human consumption. Unlike the European Directive 98/83/EC from which it derives, it establishes as a prior step the measurement of the total alpha and beta activity indices. The determination of the alpha index is a relatively simple and rapid procedure to implement, but suffer from such a degree of lack of precise definition that often, the results for at the same water provided by different laboratories, may easily differ from each other by orders of magnitude. We therefore propose to conduct an eminently experimental study to determine all the possible factors that may be involved in the cited variability of the results. In this project, the University of Extremadura(UEX) and University of Barcelona(UB) participate in different research sections.
